4 3/4" Depth x 6" Width (base). This rare early to mid 19th century Ame ri can folk art, antique, handmade, primitive red painted wooden violin coffin case, is only missing the top leather hand grasp, which had long ago torn away and is now absent.

The metal latch hook is also missing but the moderately oxidized metal latch hoop is still present. This nearly 200 year-old, very rare, handmade wooden coffin case for a violin and bow, was recently discovered in an estate in Nashua, southern New Hampshire, along the northern Massachusetts border.

Nashua was an early New Hampshire settlement and the violin coffin case was realized by a most likely local cabinet maker sometime between 1835 to 1855, well before the outbreak of the US Civil War. It's shaped like a wood coffin and is made of most likely local, milled pine boards. Each side and the chamfered top and bottom sidewalls are each made of single pieces or boards of pine.

The violin case still has its original brass lid hinges. The inside of the naturally aged pine case interestingly, has a hand painted black ink brush drawing, of what appears to be a Scottish Terrier dog and is signed'H. The case has intentional cut-outs on each end to accommodate a long violin bow. A fantastic New England Ame ri can folk art antique red painted wood violin coffin case. Imagine the stories it would tell if only it could talk.

Good to Very Good overall antique condition. The leather strap handle on the center of the coffin case's lid had already broken off or was previously torn away. The front clasp hook or lid latch lock is missing, but the loop is still present.

There are a few spots of black ink or paint on the lid and a few instances of white spotting, grime and what appears to be some soiling of the red painted surfaces, especially on the lid of the case. There are pencil handwriting calculations or numbers written sideways along the edge of the ink brush drawn dog's tail.
